Vintage Japanese hand-blown glass fishing float from the Showa period (mid-20th century), with its original rope net, roughly 20 cm in diameter and weighing about 1.46 kg.
Description from the seller
Object: Vintage Japanese Glass Fishing Float
Origin: Japan
Period: Showa period (mid–20th century)
Material: Hand-blown glass with original rope net
Description
This is an authentic Japanese vintage glass fishing float, featuring a rare Kanji mark “北” (Kita / North), also known among collectors as an FF mark.
This mark is historically associated with northern Japan, and is particularly linked to Hokuyo / Hokkaido coastal fishing regions.
The float displays a beautiful aqua blue to blue-green color, which subtly changes depending on light conditions—an especially appealing characteristic of hand-blown glass.
Natural bubbles, gentle waviness, and surface irregularities further confirm its traditional production.
Importantly, the float retains its original rope net, showing authentic age-related wear and patina. This original netting greatly enhances both historical value and visual appeal, as many surviving examples have lost their nets over time.
Dimensions
Diameter: approx. 20 cm
Circumference: approx. 61 cm
(Please allow for slight variations due to the hand-blown nature of the glass.)
Condition
Good vintage condition.
Minor surface scratches, bubbles, and age-related wear are present, consistent with long-term use at sea and subsequent aging. No structural damage observed.
Highlights
Rare Kanji “北” (Kita / North) mark – FF mark
Attractive aqua blue / blue-green color
Original rope net preserved
Hand-blown glass with natural bubbles and character
Sought-after piece for collectors of Japanese maritime antiques
This float is not only a decorative object but also a genuine artifact of Japan’s coastal fishing history, making it an excellent addition to a serious collection or an interior display with maritime character.
