Biblia, Dat is, de gantsche Heylige Schrifture, a 1663 Elzevier edition printed in Dutch in Roman type, bound in leather with fold-out maps and plates, 712 pages, measuring about 46 cm by 30 cm, issued by Tot Leyden, By de Weduwe ende Erffgenamen van Johan. Elzevier, Boeckdruckers van de Academie, with Privilege.
Description from the seller
Bible, that is, the entire Holy Scripture, containing all the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments. By order of the High-Mightiness of the States General of the United Netherlands, and according to the decision of the National Synod held at Dordrecht in the years 1618 and 1619. Faithfully translated from the original languages into our Dutch language. With newly added explanations on difficult passages, annotations of similar texts, and new indexes for both Testaments. And corrected by common order of the Dutch Churches for printing faults and errors found in previous editions. Published in Leiden by the widow and heirs of Johan Elzevier, booksellers of the Academy, with privilege. Also available in Amsterdam, by Louys and Daniel Elzevier, as well as Abraham vander Burgh. 1663. Folio. (46)468(28)167(4)77 pages.
A special copy of Elzevier with many maps and plates. The binding is entirely in an old style. The plates and copper engravings originate from another 17th-century Bible. The spine has been renewed with sturdy leather. Like most copies of Elzevier, this copy is also browned in the book block. This Bible contains two series of maps! One series by N. Visscher and another by C. Danckerts II. Consequently, it also includes two world maps. Additionally, this copy is enriched with engravings from Lundius's work. There are many engravings by W. Goeree. It also contains a biblical series of prints printed by Frederik de Witt from Amsterdam. A description of the prints and their condition can be found at the bottom of the description.
The Elzevier company were the academic printers of Leiden. They printed almost all the academic teaching materials and many dissertations. Now, they also undertook to print the Bible entirely in Roman type. It is stated in the Privilege that they obtained the exclusive right for 20 years to print the Bible in this type. So, everyone was now allowed to print the Bible with the permission of the city council, but only Elsevier could print the Bible entirely in Roman type until 1683.
Elsevier 1663 is completely printed in Roman type, so it is clearly legible.
A new back provides a lot of stability, so you don't need to worry about using and viewing the Bible.
