Student and assistant of Aurelie Nemours and, as such, nourished by her example, Ode Bertrand has retained from the artist a rigorous, uncompromising approach to the making of the canvas and the formal refinement that follows. Thus developing her own language, and for more than 40 years now, still painting in oil, Ode Bertrand is primarily interested in black and white. She focuses mainly on the line. Systematically tracing on her supports a grid of straight lines on a white surface, she then applies the black to the graphic function which, in her view, allows her to structure space. Rigor remains a constant in her works.
