Les Dan, connus sous le nom de Yacouba, habitent à l'ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire et au Libéria, dans une région boisée au sud et couverte par la savane au nord. Avant que des sociétés secrètes ne les unissent vers le début du siècle, les Dan vivaient dans des villages autonomes dirigés par un chef élu pour sa richesse et sa position sociale. De nos jours, la société du Léopard joue un rôle majeur dans la vie des Dan.
