Virgin of the Milk, a 17th‑century Renaissance oil on canvas from Italy, attributed to the Spanish School (XVII), depicting a devotional Madonna and Child; 49 by 65 cm and in need of restoration.
Description from the seller
Virgin of the Milk
School: Spanish (17th century)
Style: Renaissance
Technique: oil on canvas
Renaissance devotional work depicting the Virgin holding the Child in an intimate and affectionate gesture, characteristic of the iconography of the Virgen de la Leche. The composition is developed in the foreground, highlighting the maternal relationship through the crossing of gazes and the protective arrangement of Mary's hands.
The Virgin appears dressed in a dark blue cloak and a reddish tunic, following the traditional color codes of Italian Renaissance art. The Child, depicted with naturalism, rests on a light cloth whose treatment of folds reveals a detailed technique and smooth modeling. The background shows a red curtain, common in sacred works to add solemnity and depth to the scene.
The work exhibits features typical of the Italian school of the Cinquecento, especially in the softness of the volumes, the balance of the composition, and the restrained expressiveness of the faces.
Remarks:
It shows minor damages and restorations typical of its age.
Measurements: 49 x 65 cm
