Baluch Afghan rug from Pakistan, hand-knotted wool-on-cotton, 141 × 86 cm, 8 mm pile, 21st century, in very good condition and professionally cleaned.
Description from the seller
Pile: % Wool
Weft & warp: 100% cotton
Quality: Hand-knotted
Knot count: approx. 160,000 / m2
Pile height: 8 mm
Origin: Afghanistan
The Baluch carpets (also Belutsch) come from a nomadic people in the Beluchistan region, a border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They live from agriculture, carpet production, and the rearing of sheep, goats, and camels. Traditionally, the carpets are made from sheep wool or goat hair from the tribes’ own herds. Due to their tribal origin, the carpets are typically smaller because of the high transport requirements, feature geometric patterns or stylized floral motifs, and are hand-knotted. The classic dark red, brown, or blue backgrounds are often contrasted with vibrant patterns in white, ivory, yellow, or orange tones. Baluch carpets are comparatively thin, yet rather densely woven, which makes them soft and flexible. Perfect for daily use and with a lot of movement. Even today these carpets still offer an excellent price-performance ratio as well as outstanding durability.
