Original 150 mm German artillery shell casing from 1916, manufactured in Karlsruhe, brass, 1.7 kg, 15 cm diameter, 11 cm height, 15 cm depth, inert and suitable as decorative trench art in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Rare German 150mm shell casing - WWI 1916 Karlsruhe - Heavy artillery - 1.7kg
Authentic heavy artillery shell from World War I Germany, caliber 150mm, manufactured in Karlsruhe in December 1916.
Technical specifications
Diameter: 15 cm
Height: 11 cm
Weight: 1.7 kg
Material: Brass/cast copper
Significant thickness (typical of heavy artillery)
December 1916 engraved on the bottom (December 1916).
'520' marked on the upper part (lot/serial number)
Original turquoise blue interior markings.
Provenance: Karlsruhe (Baden-Württemberg)
Made in the arsenals or armament factories of Karlsruhe, an important industrial city in southern Germany during the Great War. The Karlsruhe region housed several armament manufacturers producing extensively for the German war effort.
This shell casing most likely comes from a German heavy field howitzer (such as the sFH 13 or K 16 type) used on the Western Front. The 150mm shells were used to destroy fortifications and bombard enemy lines at long range.
Old natural patina with characteristic noble green oxidation of century-old brass. Perfectly visible circular machining marks of origin. A beautiful piece of 'trench art' transformed into a decorative object in the immediate post-war period, a common practice in conflict zones.
All markings are consistent with German production from 1916. The significant weight (1.7kg) and the thickness of the metal confirm that it is an authentic piece of heavy artillery.
Object neutralized and inert, completely emptied of any explosive or pyrotechnic components. For decorative and collectible use only.
