Castle King vintage laminated wood tennis racket, original and handcrafted, dating from circa 1960–1970, produced in Castelfidardo, Italy, complete with strings and case, in very good condition for its age.
Description from the seller
Vintage CASTLE tennis racket – KING model, original, handcrafted, made in the 1970s, the peak period for laminated wood rackets before the advent of composite materials.
The frame is made of plywood, with original decorations on the bridge (a star motif and the KING logo with a castle), typical of the period's production.
The word 'handcrafted' on the frame bears witness to the artisanal craftsmanship, a hallmark of mid-to-high quality models designed for gaming.
Castle managed to carve out a place of honor in the world tennis panorama: the great Rino Tommasi called them “works of art,” while many expert players appreciated their characteristics and quality. The American Chemold entrusted the construction of its frames to the expert hands of Castle’s men, finding in the Australian Rod Laver (in the eyes of experts one of the top three greatest players of all time) an exceptional ambassador, who, with a racket produced in Castelfidardo (AN - Italy) in his hand, conquered numerous trophies. Just as among the panels and the photos on display the racket wielded in his early days by the young Andre Agassi and the young Francesca Schiavone were also theirs, with different brands, made in Castle (see the photographed newspaper article).
The racquet is complete with strings and is structurally sound, with no visible deformities of the frame. The decals and finishes are well preserved, with a normal and consistent patina of age.
Condition: very good for its age, solid frame, strings present, normal signs of use and aging, no breaks or restorations.
The racket belonged to my father-in-law, who used it in the 1970s. It has been kept in a domestic setting.
