René Carcan (1920-1993)
René Carcan was a Belgian engraver, painter, and sculptor, born in Brussels in 1920 and died in 1993. An important figure in burin engraving and etching in the second half of the 20th century, he is known for his instantly recognizable universe: soft light, Mediterranean architecture, gardens, stylized trees, poetic geometry.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, then at La Cambre, where he received solid training in graphic arts. His early works are characterized by rigorous drawing and a keen attention to composition.
Rémy Carcan dies in 1993. In 2003, an International Prize for Engraving René Carcan is created to encourage contemporary creation in the field of artistic printmaking, extending his influence.
