Description from the seller

Gouache on parchment in a mixed media technique in which collage techniques have also been applied. The handmade painting is enlivened with cut-out print elements and textiles.
The depicted saint is Saint Engelbert.

Engelbert II of Berg (Schloss Burg, Solingen, 1185 – Gevelsberg, 7 November 1225), from 1216 Engelbert I of Cologne, later also called Engelbert the Saint, was a German cleric and statesman from the Middle Ages. He was, among other things, Count of Berg, Archbishop and Prince-Elector of Cologne, and was venerated as a saint after his violent death.

Engelbertus is depicted as a bishop with a bishop's staff. His figure is composed of print elements and woven with gold-thread textiles. He stands against a hand-painted backdrop featuring architecture, a garden, and a parrot.

This religious scene is encased in a marbled wooden frame from the period with glass. This glass is hand-blown with a small air bubble in the glass.

Dimensions
- 18.8 x 14 x 2 cm

Condition: some water damage to the image carrier, causing some discoloration. The little frame has seen quite a bit of use. (see photos)
