Exquisite Cast Iron Buddhist Mask by Living National Treasure Keiten Takahashi This striking cast iron mask, titled "Ji" (Benevolence/Compassion), is a masterpiece by the renowned artisan Takahashi Keiten (1920–2009). Keiten was designated a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Property) in 1996 for his exceptional skill in "Cha-no-yu" (tea ceremony) kettle making.
Artistic Significance and Craftsmanship
The Artisan: Keiten Takahashi was a master of the Yamagata casting tradition. His works are celebrated for their elegant forms and sophisticated textures, highly sought after by collectors of fine Japanese metalwork.
The Subject: The mask depicts the serene face of a Buddha, embodying the spirit of "Ji" (慈), which signifies loving-kindness and compassion. The gentle expression and closed eyes provide a sense of profound peace and spiritual protection to any interior space.
