Description from the seller
Bulbous ceramic jug with peacock-eye decoration, Lower Silesia, 19th century
Decorative ceramic jug from Silesia, made in the 19th century. The characteristic form with a bulbous body, recessed neck, and side handle reflects the regionally typical utilitarian pottery of that era.
The jug is completely adorned with a hand-painted dot decoration: blue circles on a light ground, framed by a green lattice, creating a lively, rhythmic overall impression. This decoration is read as the so-called 'peacock eye' motif, a pattern widespread in Silesian folk ceramics. Besides its decorative effect it also carries symbolic meaning and traditionally stands for protection, vigilance, and luck. Such motifs were preferably used on utilitarian vessels and are typical of rural ceramics of the 19th century.
Historical context:
Silesia belonged in the 19th century to the Kingdom of Prussia and was not part of Poland. The region had a long tradition of pottery with numerous local workshops producing ceramics for everyday use. The current territorial assignment to Poland occurred only after 1945.
state
Age- and usage-related condition with visible wear to the glaze and minor chips, especially at the edge and in the base area. These traces are age-related, not restored, and emphasize the authentic character of the object.
Material: Glazed ceramic
Dating: 19th century
Origin: Lower Silesia (then Prussia)
Finish: Hand-painted
Type: everyday-use or storage jar
