The upper part shows a reclining turtle – a very important and beloved motif in Chinese seal art.
The turtle is one of the four heavenly creatures (四靈, sì líng) in Chinese mythology.
Symbolism
Longevity and immortality:
The turtle symbolizes a long life and is associated with wisdom due to its great age.
Cosmic meaning: The shield represents the sky (round) and the body the earth (square).
Stability and protection: A powerful protective symbol
Happiness and prosperity: Often used by scholars and civil servants
The naturalistic depiction of the turtle with visible shell segments and details attests to craftsmanship. This type of knob was particularly popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties among scholars and collectors.
