Vincent van Gogh:
Vincent van Gogh, one of the most important artists of Post-Impressionism, is known for his expressive brushstrokes, intense colors, and emotional pictorial language. His works, including "Starry Night" and "Sunflowers", influenced numerous artists and movements of modernism. Van Gogh was in close contact with Paul Gauguin, with whom he maintained a brief but intense artistic collaboration in Arles. His brother Theo van Gogh also played a central role in his life and supported his art. His painting style shows parallels with the works of Paul Cézanne, whose structured compositions Van Gogh admired, as well as with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, who experimented with Pointillism.
The influence of Japanese woodcuts, especially the works of Katsushika Hokusai, shaped van Gogh's visual language just as the vivid colors of Impressionism from Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro did. Edvard Munch's symbolic works and emotional expressiveness later reveal themes similar to van Gogh. Also Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, with whom van Gogh circulated in Paris, influenced his artistic development. Vincent van Gogh's intense use of color and emotional depth inspired Expressionism, particularly artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc.
Even Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse saw in van Gogh's works a new way to unite emotion and color in art. Other related artists include Odilon Redon, who also explored inner worlds and symbolism, as well as Amedeo Modigliani, whose portraits, in their pared-down style, recall van Gogh's late works. With his unique style, which bridges impressionism and expressionism, Vincent van Gogh decisively shaped the development of modern art.
