Description from the seller
Space Age desk lamp “Astronaut” – attributed to Pavel Grus, Czechoslovakia c. 1960–1970
Special vintage Space Age desk lamp, also known by the nickname "Astronaut", due to the futuristic design that evokes an astronaut helmet or rocket engine. This iconic design is attributed to designer Pavel Grus and dates from the 60s/70s, a period when space exploration and futurism had a major influence on industrial design in Czechoslovakia.
The lamp is characterized by:
a conical metal shade in striking orange, a heavy round metal base in yellow and an adjustable arm with a clamping mechanism, making the lamp functional and flexible.
A pronounced mid-century / Space Age aesthetic.
Although no maker's label or stamp was found, the design, construction, and the materials used correspond to known Pavel Grus models that were produced for the Czechoslovak lighting industry (including Kamenický Šenov). Therefore the lamp is attributed to Pavel Grus.
Period: circa 1960–1970
Origin: Czechoslovakia
Material: metal
Condition: vintage condition with light signs of wear appropriate to the age (see photos)
Electrical: working, European plug
A rare, decorative design object that fits perfectly in a mid-century modern, retro, or Space Age interior, and is highly sought after by collectors of European design from the 1960s and 1970s.
