Een letterkast die werd gebruikt in drukkerijen om loden letters en andere typografische tekens te ordenen.
Elke letter had een specifiek vakje, waardoor de drukker snel woorden en zinnen kon samenstellen. 
De afzonderlijke laden hebben tientallen, ongelijkmatig verdeelde, kleine vakjes.

De letterkast (of lade) zoals deze werd gebruikt in de traditionele boekdrukkunst, werd geproduceerd en gebruikt van de 15e tot de 20e eeuw. 
De boekdrukkunst met losse letters werd rond 1440 uitgevonden door Johannes Gutenberg.
Deze methode bleef de standaard tot de opkomst van offsetdruk en digitale zetmethoden in de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw (circa 1980).

Typisch gemaakt van natuurlijk hout, vaak met zichtbare sporen van intensief gebruik, wat bijdraagt aan de nostalgische uitstraling.
