Antique Indian entrance portal (double door) dating to the British Raj period (1858–1947), made of wood, with a height of 239 cm, width 148 cm, depth 14 cm, in moderate condition with possible missing small parts and to be collected due to its weight of over 100 kg.
Description from the seller
Ancient Indian entry portal (double-leaf door),
- approx. 100 years old -
The door frame was predominantly made of reddish wood (probably teak), while the door leaves were made of yellowish-brown tropical wood (probably mango).
The three-tiered door frame is decorated with elaborate chip-carving work, predominantly depicting botanical motifs – flowers, leaves and vines.
In addition, on the headpiece of the frame, the 'AUM' symbol is carved in the center, and on either side the name 'RAMA' is carved twice each, the 7th incarnation of Vishnu.
"AUM" as the primal sound of creation represents the divine in its entirety; placing it on the door frame is believed to confer divine protection.
"RAMA" is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
In some places, missing fragments have been added (see photo 2).
In photo 11, the damaged lower left corner of the left door panel is visible.
You can glean more details from the photos.
The portal has the following dimensions:
Height of the frame: 239cm
Width of the door frame: 148cm
Depth of the frame: 14 cm
Height of the door leaves: 178 cm
Width of both door leaves: 99cm
Because of its dimensions and its heavy weight—over 100 kg—the portal must be picked up.
