Antonio Merino Martínez (Valladolid, 1903 – Madrid, 1977) began his studies in drawing and painting in his hometown (Valladolid) with Professor Don José López Torres, and in Bilbao with Don Federico Sáenz.
He moved to Madrid in 1920 to enroll at the San Fernando Royal School of Fine Arts, where he received lessons from Professors Don Aurelio García Lesmes and Don Antonio Miguel Nieto.
He took part in a competitive examination organized by the Bilbao city council in 1925, winning the position and temporarily abandoning painting.
Sixteen years later, he returns to paint in Bilbao, under the sponsorship of the Swiss group.
He displayed his works at several exhibitions, including the Provincial of Fine Arts, with the paintings Portrait of Mrs. Bejarano's Widow and Portrait of José María Eguidazu. In Barcelona in 1946 and at the First Hispano-American Art Biennial held in Madrid in 1951, where he presented the painting Portrait of the painter Largacha.
He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Diputación de Vizcaya in 1945 and received other, more modest awards.
In 1948, he was hired by the Bilbao City Council to create an oil portrait of Federico Moyua Salazar, the mayor of the town.
