Early French Comtoise clock (Morbier) with a rare dish dial and rooster-fronton, dating circa 1780, made of metal with a rope-wound mechanical movement and bell striking, 36 cm high overall.
Description from the seller
Early French Comtoise clock (Morbier) with a rare dish-shaped dial and a rooster pediment, dated by an expert to around 1780.
This concerns an early type 'schotel haan', pre-revolutionary, with a brass pediment adorned with the French rooster and three fleurs-de-lis (lilies), the royal symbol of France in the 18th century.
The clock is equipped with an original spindle-driven movement with rope-winding and a bell strike.
The clock comes from a private collection and has always worked well, but in recent years it has not been wound anymore. The movement looks complete and authentic; a cleaning and maintenance service by a clockmaker is recommended to have it run reliably for a long time.
A specialized collector has classified the clock as a beautiful, early 'schotel haan' from around 1780. Because of the damaged dial, the market value is depressed; restoration of the enamel is quite feasible, but I’ll leave that to the buyer.
Technical data
Clockwork:
● Gear train (crown wheel escapement)
● Rope-winding with two weights (timekeeping and strike mechanism)
Percussion on the bell (at the hours and half-hours, with repeated strikes)
Dial
● Bolle, enameled dial plate
• Roman numerals for hours, Arabic minute indicators
Fronton / cabinet:
● Brass fronton with a rooster and three fleurs-de-lis
● Iron 'cage' clockwork cabinet with alarm bell
Completeness:
● Two original cast-iron weights
● Thread shooter with a pear-shaped pendulum lens
● Wind-up key
● Bell seat (curved metal)
Dimensions
● Clock cabinet: 23 cm high x 21.5 cm wide x 14 cm deep
• Height including fronton: 36 cm
● Depth including dial indicator plate 15.5 cm
Shipping and pickup information
Due to the weight of the weights and the fragility of the dial, pickup in Montfoort (Netherlands) is strongly preferred.
Insured and well-packaged shipping is possible at the buyer's risk and expense. The clock will be carefully disassembled for shipment (weights and pendulum packed separately, the bell protected).
