Description from the seller
Original edition of this fine monograph devoted to Charlemagne by the cartographer Alphonse Vétault (1843-1898), for whom the Académie française awarded in 1879 the Grand Gobert Prize. His work will and continues to be a reference.
A reference work illustrated with 22 engravings out of the text, of which 3 are in color—chromolithography, most with legends; a large fold-out color map and 1 diploma (of Charlemagne) that unfolds, and 125 black-engraved figures in the text.
Luxury copy, bound in a beautiful cherry half-maroquin binding with cornerpieces, gold fillets along the boards and corners, spine with raised bands adorned with gilt compartments and personalized stamps (Charlemagne crown and laurel branches), title and publisher's name stamped in gilt letters, top edge gilt.
In good condition. Binding of good quality showing rubbing at the edges, corners, joints, and spine cords. Fragments of the headcap torn off. Spine cracked for 5 cm. One folding plate torn, two others detached. Paper bright, with no foxing or only rare spots, captions to the plates and two illustrations browned.
