Borgert Carolus van Ettinger, the man who captured 'The Hague after the war' on hundreds of paintings for decades, sat on the luggage rack and painted his canvases, which he clamped onto his bicycle.
Carolus 'Bol' van Ettinger was a well-known figure in The Hague's street scene, recognized by passersby as the 'Cycling Rembrandt' or 'Rembrandt on the bike.' He mainly found his subjects in the picturesque neighborhoods in and around the old city center of The Hague. With this, he immortalized the city as many older residents still remember from their youth. Houses, streets, and squares that have disappeared—the atmosphere of the real The Hague from the 1950s, '60s, and '70s—are all captured in the images that van Ettinger created outdoors day after day.
