Description from the seller
Divine miniature figurines – including 2 very rare Balarama (Baladeva)
Pair of Balarama
19th and 20th centuries
Solid copper
Height: approx. 5 cm
Rare pair in solid copper of votive figures depicting Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna, shown standing in a hieratic attitude. Each figure stands facing forward, with a slight hip sway, left hand on the hip while the right holds the mace (gada) or ritual staff, emblem of strength and authority associated with the god. The two statuettes feature a circular halo (prabhāvali) fused in one piece behind the head, a face with full features, almond-shaped incised eyes, a discreet smile, conical coiffure, abundant ornaments (necklaces, sacred cord, belt, bracelets), short skirt with carved pleats, a heavy rectangular base ensuring stability.
The presence of two identical effigies of Balarama is unusual and very rare! These pairs are considerably rarer than the solitary figures.
Condition: homogeneous old patina, gentle wear on the reliefs, small oxidations.
Parvati
19th century
Copper alloy
Height: approx. 6 cm
Small devotional figure representing Parvati, Shiva’s consort, standing in a frontal and hieratic pose. The bare torso with pronounced feminine curves, a slim waist, and supple hips emphasized by a short pleated dhoti. The right hand is raised, holding a lotus, while the left rests on the hip in a graceful attitude. The tall conical hairstyle, incised jewelry, and the circular nimbus fused in one piece characterize the domestic bronzes of southern India. The surface displays a beautiful brown patina nuanced with green, revealing age and ritual handling.
Condition: even antique patina, gentle wear to the reliefs, small localized green oxidation, and slight rubbing on the edges.
Small seated votive figure.
India, 19th century
copper alloy
Height: approx. 4.5 cm
Charming miniature statuette depicting a seated figure in a frontal pose, legs spread in a stable position on a small flared base. The torso is draped with a cross-wrapped garment, the head crowned with a conical bun. The simple volumes, naive modeling of the face with large eyes, and the overall stylization evoke a popular production intended for domestic devotion or the family altar.
Condition: The surface shows a dark brown patina tinged with green, reflecting age and ritual handling.
Provenance: Portuguese Collection - Kanaka The Collection
