An exceptional example of refined Japanese craftsmanship from Zohiko (Heian Zohiko), Kyoto’s oldest and most prestigious lacquerware studio, founded in 1661.
This elegant Te-moto-bako (stationery box) is adorned with the classic “Nami-Chidori” (Waves and Plovers) motif—an auspicious design symbolizing overcoming adversity, harmony, and marital happiness in traditional Japanese culture.
The surface is finished in Tame-nuri, a sophisticated lacquer technique in which translucent urushi is layered over a dark base, creating a deep, lustrous burgundy-black tone that gains richness and depth with age.
Details:
• Material: Natural wood with genuine urushi lacquer (not plastic)
• Decoration: Fine gold maki-e (sprinkled gold lacquer)
• Origin: Kyoto, Japan
• Signature: Zohiko seal impressed on the underside
