Ceremonial silver-handled walking cane with ebony wood, 91 cm long and 8.4 cm diameter at the grip with a 3 cm tip, hallmarked Lion Passant, Leopard Head, and producer initials LHF for London assay, dating to the late 19th century, in excellent condition with light wear.
Description from the seller
Type: ceremonial/gala walking cane.
Dimensions: length 91 cm x 8.40 cm x 3 cm
Knob: Made of solid sterling silver, 925, with an ergonomic "beak" or stylized "bird head" shape. The surface bears an authentic patina and some small signs of wear (dents and scratches) that attest to its antiquity and original use.
High-quality dark ebony wood.
Puntale: It features a metal collar at the base to protect the wood from ground contact.
The stamps on the knob's collar are essential for identification. From the close-up images, we can distinguish:
The Passant Lion (Lion Passant): It is the British guarantee mark for sterling silver (finest 925/1000). It indicates that the silver is of guaranteed high quality.
Leopard Head: This is the mark of the London Assay Office (Assay Office).
Manufacturer's mark "LHF": These initials identify the silversmith. It is highly likely to be Lawrence Henry Faller (active between the late 19th century and the early 20th century), a well-known producer of silver mountings for canes and umbrellas.
Dataria letter: Although less legible in the photos, it typically accompanies these marks to indicate the exact year of production (e.g., a lowercase letter in a specific cartouche).
