Etude de feu, an oil on cardboard study by Jacques Alfred van Muyden (1818–1898), Switzerland, Romanticism, 19th century, 48 × 35 cm, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Jacques Alfred van Muyden (1818–1898)
Study of Fire
Oil on cardboard, monogrammed and annotated on the back.
Dimensions : 40 × 27 cm
Interesting and rare study of fire depicting a knight in full armor, seen in profile, in a dynamic posture that evokes both observation and readiness for action. The figure, rendered with great descriptive precision, testifies to Jacques Alfred van Muyden's notable interest in historical and military subjects, as well as to his mastery of drawing and light.
The armor, rendered with notable care, subtly captures the metallic reflections thanks to a subdued and nuanced palette, contrasting with a background that is deliberately more free and sketchy. The handling is confident, expressive, and typical of a study piece designed to explore the effects of material, posture, and light before a more ambitious composition.
Monogrammed work with annotations on the reverse, confirming its status as an atelier study. Painted on cardboard, a technique frequently used by the artist for his studies, enabling rapid and lively execution.
Jacques Alfred van Muyden, a renowned Swiss painter of the 19th century, is particularly appreciated for his historical, military, and animal scenes, today preserved in several public and private collections.
A very fine work with character, ideal for lovers of 19th-century painting, of historical subjects or military scenes.
The artwork will be prepared and packed with the utmost care and attention, using materials suitable for protection during transport.
However, although postal shipping represents an economical solution, it is not the most suitable method for transporting artworks. For this reason I cannot guarantee the absence of any damage, especially to antique frames, which can suffer due to handling and vibrations during transport.
Even for shipments within Europe, longer delivery times can be expected, and in some cases, import charges or customs formalities.
Upon request, I would be happy to provide a quotation through professional carriers specializing in the transportation of works of art.
In-person pickup in Geneva remains, in any case, the best and safest option.
