Born in 1927 in Zhitomir, Ukraine.
Training
Filcer began training at the age of seventeen at the leading Mexican art academy, the Academia de San Carlos.
Has worked in, among other places, Rome, Amsterdam, and Mexico.
Luis Filcer had to flee with his parents to Mexico at a young age. There he pursued schooling and achieved his first success. A scholarship enabled him to study for two years at various art academies in Europe. Filcer lived for a long time in the Netherlands, but during that period he also travelled extensively. The central theme of his work, often figurative scenes and portraits, is the contradictions within humanity on social and economic levels as well as in matters of religion.
Exhibitions and prices
In 1949 Filcer won a silver medal in a Mexican art competition; in 1950 and 1952 he won gold medals. Filcer has represented Mexico at three Biennales, namely in Chile, Japan, and England. There have been more than 200 exhibitions of his works, the largest of which was in 1994 at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City.
