Subject: Pair of bronze bookends attributed to C Charles
Style and year of manufacture: Art Deco / circa 1930.
Dimensions of an item: 15 cm x 10 cm x 8 cm.
In good condition, only a small chip is visible in one corner.
Materials: black patinated bronze and green emerald marble veined with white.

They represent theatre masks, one depicting comedy and the other tragedy, derived from Greek mythology.

These bookends are a pair of Art Deco objects made of cast iron or silvered bronze, depicting the traditional masks of tragedy and comedy.
Features
Each piece features a stylized face mounted on a square base, one expressing pain (tragedy), the other joy (comedy).
Materials and Style The masks are fixed on rectangular bases in veined green marble. Their style is characteristic of the Art Deco aesthetic of the 1930s.
These models are often attributed to C. Charles, an Art Deco sculptor, sometimes in collaboration with the art foundry Max Le Verrier.
