Large triangular coupe in solid crystal, model “Patelle,” produced by the Val Saint Lambert crystal works in the 1960s. This emblematic piece of the formal renewal of the Belgian manufacturer perfectly illustrates the sculptural and fluid aesthetics developed during that period, marked by a pronounced taste for organic forms and the play of mass in thick crystal. The presented example preserves its original label and bears a signature engraved with a pointed tool under the foot, elements attesting to its authenticity.

The cut adopts a triangular shape with broadly rounded corners, evoking a stylized patella shell. The crystal, tinted in a deep pink with graduated nuances, is worked in a thick, substantial thickness, creating effects of depth and movement. The upper surface is animated by three broad twisted ribs that converge toward the center, giving the impression of a slow whirl frozen in the material. The edge is thick, carefully polished, while the stem, discreetly integrated into the mass, ensures perfect stability while remaining visually light. The three lower faces, flat and slightly inclined, contribute to the geometric rigor of the whole.

The set is in good overall condition. However, there are signs of use in the form of scratches visible on each of the three lower faces; these marks, perceptible to the eye as well as to the touch, attest to older use without altering either the structure or the overall aesthetics of the piece. The crystal shows neither chips nor cracks, and the tint remains bright and homogeneous.

In the 1960s, Val Saint Lambert fully embraced the international modernist movement, deeply renewing its formal vocabulary while maintaining a remarkable level of execution. The glassworks, buoyed by its historic know-how, develops models with bold lines, often crafted in solid crystal, intended for a contemporary interior. The 'Patelle' model fits into this dynamic, where the material becomes sculpture, and it illustrates Val Saint Lambert's ability to combine traditional glassmaking with modern creation at the heart of its postwar golden age.
