Description from the seller

Exceptional specimen of the fundamental work by Lorenz Heister, "Institutiones Chirurgicae", published in Naples in 1759 (Neapolitan Edition). Heister was the first to systematize surgery in a modern way, and this treatise was the 'bible' of European surgeons for decades.
• Content: Two volumes with 4 Tomes (Tomus Primus and Tomus Secundus, Tomus Tertia, Tomus Quartus) that cover all surgical techniques of the era, from ocular operations to amputations and fracture treatments. 1169 pages and about 34 engravings
• Illustrations: A work richly illustrated with numerous copper plates (engravings) that unfold, presenting precision surgical instruments, ligatures, and procedures.
Condition: Period binding in full leather with raised bands and gilt tooling on the spine. The interior shows natural wear of time (some oxidation spots and signs of use), but maintains the integrity of the engravings and the text. Includes the author's portrait on the frontispiece.
• Provenance: Acquired at the prestigious Palácio do Correio Velho auction in 2002. (Includes the original auction invoice showing the purchase, which proves the provenance)
