Description from the seller
Coptic Orthodox Cross
Ottone
Ethiopia
20th century
Originally crafted by Ethiopian ecclesiastical artisans to be carried by the officiants during blessings and other functions of their office, this type of portable cross is a symbol of faith.
lasting for this country that embraced Christianity in the 4th century AD.
As befits such an ancient form, the cross is rich in symbolism and meaning.
The panel at the center of the cross is richly decorated with an intricate lattice that characterizes many Ethiopian crosses. The play of light and shadow it creates yields a hypnotic sense of motion that seems incessant; the lack of a beginning or end is often said to represent eternal life, though this intertwining is sometimes interpreted as a kind of spiritual net meant to trap evil spirits. The ends of the cross bars terminate in three rays, each triad symbolizing the Trinity; the twelve resulting ends are generally said to represent the apostles.
The leaf-shaped, etched details, where the upper and lower elements of the cross are fixed to the shaft, signify an association with the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden.
Similarly, the boxy shape at the base of the cross symbolizes the Ark of the Covenant.
In this example, this element is engraved with the image of a bearded man, probably the Ethiopian saint Yared, to whom the composition of the music of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is attributed.
