Description from the seller
Anton Martineau – Appasionato III
Appasionato III is an expressive lithograph in which Anton Martineau uses his characteristic figurative style to capture emotion, movement and human dynamics. Lively, stylized figures form a rhythmic composition that expresses the inner energy and passion of the subjects. The work invites the viewer to feel what lies behind the lines and colors, so that form and emotion together create a powerful, almost musical intensity.
Anton Martineau (1926-2017)
Lived in Amsterdam and trained at the Royal Academy of Art (The Hague) and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam). Anton Martineau is an internationally acclaimed artist; he exhibited in 1967 with Saura and Tapies at Galerie Stadler in Paris. Together with his friend Jan Sierhuis he belonged to a somewhat younger generation than the Cobra painters. His oeuvre consists of paintings, drawings and prints in a strongly expressionist figurative style. Spontaneous drawing plays an important role in his work.
Subjects are, first and foremost: the human, dancing couples, tango, eroticism, the drama of love and death, joy and fear, absurd portraits and still lifes. His lyrical style was sometimes classified as international new figurativism but also shows affinities with Cobra’s and Lucebert’s expressionism. He was therefore friends with Karel Appel, Corneille and the poet Gerrit Kouwenaar. Because he wished to follow his own path, he did not seek close affiliation with Cobra. Yet the development of his work in the mid-1960s coincided with the zeitgeist of the Provo movement and the sexual revolution. The pleasure Martineau takes in painting and handling oil paint may be seen from his comparison of the sensual experience of squeezing a tube of paint with an orgasm, … while the actual work has yet to begin.
Dimensions of the work with frame: 112 x 91 cm
Dimensions of the work without frame: 85 x 65 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. In addition, we have our own in-house framers, celebrating their 85th anniversary. We also make use of restorers from the professional association: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you would like to use this, please let us know.
