Large circular Meiji-period ceramic plate (Sometsuke) in cobalt blue on white, 53 cm in diameter and 7 cm high, with the four-character mark 明治年製 on the base, showing a central landscape with boats and mountains and a back decorated with three blooming branches, but with a prominent edge chip about 1.5 cm, a radial hairline crack of 2–3 cm, small firing irregularities and old adhesive residues.
Description from the seller
Important large circular plate, featuring exuberant cobalt blue decoration on a white ground.
• Front: In the center, a circular medallion outlined by a band with geometric motifs encloses a riverscape animated by figures on boats, traditional architectures, and mountains in the background. The rim is decorated in the horror vacui style with broad cloud- and fan-shaped reserves, alternating with stylized floral motifs and seigaiha waves.
• Back: The reverse bears three flowering branches distributed along the outer wall and a radial geometric band near the foot. At the center of the base, within a double blue circle, is the four-character mark 明治年製 (Meiji Nen Sei – Produced during the Meiji period).
Conservation State
The object has been carefully examined and shows the following flaws, common for the typology and era:
• Chip: A noticeable chip on the outer edge, about 1.5 cm, which has removed part of the glaze and the porcelain thickness.
• Hairline: A thin radial surface crack (fissure) starting from the edge and extending inward for about 2–3 cm.
• Firing defects: Presence of small pits (iron black points) and slight irregularities in the glaze at the base, inherent to the manufacture.
• Residues: Traces of old adhesive labels on the base.
Shipping cost also includes the cost of secure packing.
