Lime box - Silver - Myanmar - Mid-20th century

DESCRIPTION

Burmese silver lime pot finely worked, using the repoussé technique. This lime box features a floral design and a mythic animal figure on the top of the lid. A flower is found on the underside, perhaps the maker's mark. This type of lime box was for domestic use and often used to honor important guests.

Very fine artisanal metalwork.

These boxes served as containers for slaked lime, which, mixed with areca nut and spices and wrapped in a betel leaf, was chewed to produce an euphoric effect. This practice continues in Burma (Myanmar).

Circa the early 20th century.

CONDITION

Good condition, but shows signs of age and use, with oxidation and nicks on the rim (see photos).
