Description from the seller
An extremely rare edition of the most important theological work by Martinus Peresius Aiala, also known as Martin Pérez de Ayala (1504-1566), who was Archbishop of Valencia and participated in the Council of Trent at the behest of Emperor Charles V.
On the divine apostolic and ecclesiastical traditions, and on the authority and power of their most sacred assertions, as if ten books... Authored by the Very Reverend Lord Father Martin Peresio Aiala, Bishop of Guidixiensium... Venice, at the Sign of Hope, 1551.
Pp.: (XVI), 336. COMPLETE (cards numbered only on the recto).
A specimen with cards in overall good condition, with moisture stains on the early cards and the usual signs of wear and aging.
Provenance: the ex-libris label and the library stamps of the now-defunct library, “Ex Oblatorum S. Caroli bibliotheca, apud Bayswater” in London, are present. In the Gonnelli auction house’s February 2019 sale no. 26, “Books and Graphics,” a book bearing this identical stamp was sold (lot no. 1283).
Also present a handwritten episcopal ex-libris dated 1801.
Eighteenth-century binding in full parchment, with a title on a spine label. With some light wear but very well preserved overall. White flyleaves. Blue edges.
