Description from the seller
First Nederduitsch reading book, for the use of public schooling in the southern provinces
Brussels, We. Ad. Stapleaux, 1826
This work forms a crucial document for the study of the history of education in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Meyer compiled this reading book due to a lack of suitable didactic material for Dutch-language teaching in the Brussels region. The edition dates from before the Belgian Revolution and illustrates the language policy of that period.
Binding: cardboard cover with (stained) parchment spine and blue marbled paper on the boards.
Interior: binding in good condition, at the top some pages show dog-ears. Between each printed sheet there is a blank sheet bound in for notes. On some pages there are old notes. At the beginning of the book there are old ownership notes.
Early editions of schoolbooks from the southern provinces are rare, since these articles typically have a low survival rate. Copies of this particular edition are in various heritage collections.
