Description from the seller
冨田立山 Tomita Ritsuzan(1947- )
This is an exceptional Echizen lacquerware document box (Fumibako / Bunko) created by Tomita Ritsuzan (born 1947, real name Nobuo Tomita), a master Chinkin (gold inlay carving) artisan from Kawada, Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture — the historic center of Echizen lacquerware production.
The piece is handcrafted in wood and finished with traditional hon-urushi (natural lacquer). The surface is decorated using the refined Chinkin technique, in which patterns are meticulously carved into the lacquer surface and filled with gold powder. The elegant peony motif demonstrates the artist’s precision carving and masterful control of depth and line.
Tomita Ritsuzan has over 40 years of experience as a professional Chinkin master. He has been selected and awarded at the prestigious Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) and the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition. His works have even been chosen as official gifts presented by the Prime Minister of Japan.
Echizen lacquerware is officially designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan and is renowned for its durability, refined finish, and centuries-old craftsmanship.
The lid is signed in gold. Originally purchased at Tenmaya Department Store, the piece includes its original wrapping paper and care leaflet.
A highly collectible and museum-quality example of authentic Japanese lacquer artistry by an established master.
