The grooved wooden wheel allowed the rope to pass smoothly over the top of the well structure, reducing friction and preventing excessive wear during daily use. Constructed entirely from wood using traditional joinery techniques, the pulley reflects the practical craftsmanship of rural Japan. The deep, smoothly worn groove in the wheel bears witness to long-term functional use, offering a tangible record of its working life. The large central wheel remains housed securely within its supporting frame and is able to rotate. The darkened surface patina has developed naturally over time through exposure and use. Numerous age-related cracks are present throughout the wooden wheel, including a particularly large crack visible on one side. Minor surface dirt, scuffs, and small chips are also present, and one of the protruding wooden handle ends shows breakage and loss to the tip. Evidence of woodworm activity is visible in places.
