Description from the seller
Antique apothecary mortar with pestle – late 17th / early 18th century
Very fine antique apothecary mortar with accompanying pestle, made from solid brass/bronze, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century.
The mortar has a classic cylindrical shape with rounded ears, a slightly flared rim and an authentic, deep patina that points to long historical use. The bottom features concentric grooves, typical of artisanal production from the 17th–18th century.
On the bottom there is a size/class designation, a common labeling for apothecary mortars and not a modern serial number.
The pestle is of an early type with a double-bulbous end, characteristic of the 17th century. Based on shape, proportions, wear, material and patina, it is assumed that pestle and mortar were historically used together. The balance and proportions are correct for professional apothecary use.
Dimensions & weight
• Mortar height: approx. 11 cm
• Rim diameter: approx. 12 cm
• Pestle length: approx. 22–23 cm
• Mortar weight: approx. 1.295 kg
• Pestle weight: approx. ± 675 g
• Total weight: approx. 2 kg
Condition
• Very good antique condition
• No cracks, fractures or repairs
• Original, unpolished patina
Origin
Probably the Southern Netherlands or Northern France. Typical object for use in a pharmacy, monastery or medical context.
An authentic and characterful collectible for enthusiasts of apothecary antiquities, medical history or decorative arts.
