Subtle variations in tone and color can be observed across the surface, resulting from the firing process. The interior is fitted with a removable copper insert, designed to safely hold incense ash or charcoal while protecting the ceramic body from direct heat exposure. Incense burners equipped with copper liners such as this have traditionally been used in Japanese kōdō (incense ceremony) and tea ceremony settings.
