Balinese carved wooden high-relief sculpture from Indonesia, ca. 1990–2000, polychrome with gold detailing, depicting a deity/dancer (Dewi Sri), in good used condition with minor signs of aging.
Description from the seller
Balinese relief in polychrome and gilded wood - Depiction of a Deity/Dancer (Dewi Sri) - Bali, Indonesia
Technical Description
Important high-relief wooden sculpture, a refined example of the island of Bali's artistic craftsmanship, dating from the second half of the 20th century. The work is entirely hand-carved in a single block of wood (probably Suar or Albesia), characterized by a dense grain that allows minute details.
Subject and Iconography:
The figure is portrayed frontally and wears the typical Gelung Agung (ceremonial headdress) finely perforated with floral and flame motifs (patra). The earlobe lobes are adorned with large Subeng (cylindrical earrings), while the chest is covered by a series of layered ornamental collars that simulate the precious fabrics of sacred dances. The facial expression is austere, with almond-shaped eyes and painted lips, typical of Southeast Asian aesthetic canons.
Technique and Polychromy:
The surface features rich multicolored decoration applied in layers. Of particular note is the use of a gilded finish (gold leaf or metallic pigment) that emphasizes the relief volumes, alternating with red, green, and black pigments. The back clearly shows gouge marks and chisel strokes, testifying to the wholly handmade nature of the piece.
