Description from the seller

Representative portrait painting from the 18th century, created in the southern German or Bavarian region. Age-related craquelure, the handwoven canvas, and the details of the stretcher speak for a creation in the 18th century.

Depicted is a high-ranking ecclesiastical dignitary, presumably a prince-bishop or ecclesiastical prince. He wears a black clerical robe with a high blue collar, above which a richly decorated order cross is worn. Over the arm lies an ermine cape, signifying worldly rule. In the background there is a princely crown as another insignium of his status.
The portrayal combines ecclesiastical dignity with princely representation, a typical feature of Süddeutsche church princes of the 18th century.

On the back of the canvas there is the handwritten notation:
"Ludwig Seitz pinx it" with a year. Ludwig Seitz (1844–1908) was a notable German history- and church painter. It is likely that the work was restored or revised by him in the 19th century. The inscription on the reverse suggests a later modification or restoration rather than an original authorship.
