Description from the seller
Main characteristics of the work:
• Giuseppe Santomaso (1907–1990) • “Untitled” • Gouache on paper • 42×32 cm, 68×58 cm with frame • Signed and dated “’59” at bottom left • Work archived with number SCT/462 • Provenance from an Italian private collection • Work belonging to the Italian postwar abstraction movement.
Created in 1959, at one of the most intense and recognized moments of Santomaso’s production, the work expresses a perfect balance between chromatic lightness and formal sensitivity. The transparencies and fine marks merge into a harmonious whole, of delicate and suggestive tone. A piece that conveys a sense of intimacy and visual silence, typical of the artist’s most refined research.
Giuseppe Santomaso’s painterly activity fully fits into the Italian postwar abstraction, with an intimate and meditative language in which the painting gesture becomes an expression of harmony and contemplation. In these years the artist reaches a complete balance between transparencies, signs, and painting matter.
The work is signed and dated “’59” at bottom left and is archived with the number SCT/462, an element that confirms its authenticity and correct attribution. It is presented in a contemporary frame in light lacquered wood with a passe-partout, in excellent conservation state.
Giuseppe Santomaso (Venice, 1907 – 1990) is a key figure in 20th-century Italian art, a protagonist in the renewal of postwar painting. Founder of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti and later among the most authoritative representatives of Italian lyrical abstraction, he brought his research to a level of very high formal and spiritual refinement. He participated in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale, including 1934, 1942, 1948, 1950, 1954, 1956, 1960 and 1968, winning the Painting Prize in 1954. His constant presence at international exhibitions, together with solo shows in Europe and the United States, solidified his role as one of the major interpreters of Italian abstraction. His works, today in leading museums and collections, are sought after for elegance, balance, and painting quality.
The buyer will receive the work in careful and sturdy packaging. Very fast shipping. Free collection possible in Monza/Milan.
