Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who became world famous for his intriguing, mathematically inspired works of art. With seemingly impossible constructions, infinite staircases and metamorphoses between forms, he managed to playfully challenge the laws of perspective and reality. Escher combined art and mathematics to create hypnotic patterns and visual puzzles that continue to fascinate viewers. His work reflects a unique blend of technical precision, creativity and philosophical depth. To this day, Escher inspires artists, scientists and enthusiasts worldwide.

"Sky and water I" is undoubtedly among Escher's most famous works. This work is a good example of what Escher famously called creating order from the chaos of everyday life. The print depicts fish transforming into birds and it is to do with identifying the foreground and background. The human brain however is not capable of deciphering the foreground as well as the background simultaneously. Escher mentioned that in the horizontal center strip, birds and fish are equal. But we associate flying with the air, so for the black bird the four white fish surrounding it are the air in which it flies. In the same way, swimming reminds us of water, so the four black birds surrounding the fish become for him the water in which he swims. This is a true masterpiece that ignites a sense of bewilderment and magic in the viewer.
