Beautiful Russian brass icon depicting the Mother of God, executed in refined relief within a richly ornamented frame. This type of icon was part of the personal devotion culture within the Russian Orthodox tradition.
Description
The icon shows the Mother of God, slightly turned to the left with a subdued, contemplative expression. In her left hand she holds an opened Gospel book with Church Slavonic inscription, while the right hand is depicted in a teaching or blessing gesture. The halo around the head emphasizes her holy status. The depiction is surrounded by a decorative border with floral and vine motifs.
The icon is cast in brass with clear contour lines and a lively play of light and shadow in the relief. At the top there is an integrated hanging hole, indicating use as a household icon or travel icon. Such brass icons were produced on a large scale in Russia in the 19th century and served as a tangible expression of faith, often worn or hung in domestic prayer corners.
