A.R. Penck (1939-2017)
The German painter, sculptor, musician and writer A.R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler, was born in 1939 in Dresden and initially worked in East Berlin in divided Germany. Penck's pictures are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of visual-language elements such as stick figures, signs and symbols.
Penck is also regarded as the father of the "Neue Wilde" (the New Wild), a movement of the early 1980s with an ironic and provocative aesthetics.
The frequent participant in Documenta was awarded numerous art prizes and is represented in many major collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
