The Macallan Edition No. 5 – A Symphony of Color and Craftsmanship
Edition No. 5 is the fifth release in The Macallan’s highly coveted annual Limited Edition series. This edition is dedicated to the complexity of natural color and was developed in an exclusive collaboration with the Pantone Color Institut.
While most whiskies achieve their color through additives, The Macallan guarantees 100% natural color for this bottling, derived solely from the interaction between the spirit and carefully selected oak casks. The striking purple design of the packaging was specially created by Pantone to reflect the multi-faceted nature of the whisky-making process.
Maturation Characteristics
For Edition No. 5, Whisky Maker Sarah Burgess selected exclusively American oak casks. This combination results in a bright, sunny barley-gold hue and a notably sweet, fruity profile that stands out from classic sherry-forward Macallan bottlings:
First-Fill Bourbon Barrels: Deliver intense notes of vanilla and caramel.
Hogsheads & Butts: Provide structure and subtle spicy aromas.
Tasting Notes
Nose: An explosion of vanilla and creamy toffee, underpinned by fresh oak, nutmeg, ginger, and bright fruit notes of lemon, basil, and pear.
Palate: Fresh and sweet on the palate. Caramel notes merge with poached peaches and ripe pears, followed by a soft toffee sweetness with a light oak spice in the form of nutmeg and a hint of ginger in the background.
Finish: Long-lasting, warming, and pleasantly sweet.
