AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Standing Buddha in abhaya mudrā
Sri Lanka, British Ceylon period
Mid- to late 19th century
Bronze
Height 18 cm; base 4 × 4 cm

This bronze sculpture represents the Buddha standing, the right hand raised in abhaya mudrā (gesture of protection and fearlessness), while the left hand is lowered along the body. The figure stands frontally on a hollow quadrangular base, characteristic of Sri Lankan productions.

The work features stylistic traits typical of the Sinhalese tradition, with a face of half-closed eyelids and a rigid expression, elongated ears, an ushnisha topped by a conical bloom, as well as a strongly linear treatment of the features and of the monastic drapery formed by parallel grooves covering the body. The portion of the garment falling over the left shoulder is rendered by a rhythmic relief, characteristic of Sri Lankan workshops during this period. The raised right hand is also highly marked by cube-like form features.

Condition: General wear with old patina, abrasions and small surface losses, oxidation and mineralization deposits in the hollows.

Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
