AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Buddha
Laos, Mekong region
17th century
Bronze
Height: 33 cm

This sculpture represents the Buddha seated in bhūmisparśa mudrā (earth-touching gesture), an emblematic posture of Enlightenment.

The hair is treated in tight small curls surmounted by a very long, slender ushnisha flame on top, characteristic of the regional tradition. A circular cavity visible at the front of the flame indicates the former presence of a cabochon or a precious stone, today missing.

The Buddha is mounted on an exceptionally elaborate throne, formed by an upper register in the shape of a boat or a stylized lotus with openwork sides, decorated with vegetal scrolls and beaded motifs, typical of the region’s work during the 16th and 17th centuries. This type of openwork throne, relatively rare, belongs to a decorative tradition influenced by goldsmithing and ceremonial architecture of the Lan Na period (Thailand). The lower square base rests on four short feet, evoking a reliquary pedestal or portable altar. Overall, the composition gives the sculpture a strong architectural and ceremonial presence.

The quality of the casting, the nobility of the volumes, and the richness of the throne place this work among important productions regarded as one of the gold ages of Buddhist sculpture in the Mekong region between Laos and northern Thailand.

Condition:
Presence of a crack at the neck. Small losses and old deposits consistent with age. Hollow cavity at the front of the flame corresponding to the setting of a stone once inlaid. Old green-brown patina, uniform. Structure perfectly stable.
Traces of mineralization in places. Generally good condition for its age.
