Antique wooden butter churn with cast-iron drive – 19th / early 20th century
An authentic and characterful butter churn that makes the artisanal life of yesteryear tangible. This robust specimen is made from solid wood, reinforced with wrought-iron bands and equipped with a cast-iron mechanism featuring gear transmission and a hand crank. A beautiful example of functional craftsmanship where technology and tradition meet.
The churn is built from vertical wooden staves held together by metal bands. The upper part is finished with a wooden lid on which the cast-iron drive mechanism is mounted. The crank with a wooden handle drives the rudder arm via a gear construction – a lovely visible piece of industrial simplicity.
Inside is the original churn mechanism still present. The interior shows a beautiful, well-worn patina appropriate to its age and use.
Condition
In good, authentic condition with normal signs of use and wear corresponding to its age. The middle metal ring is loose when the churn is dry; during use (and thus due to slight expansion of the wood from moisture) it will again sit firmly. This is a known and logical phenomenon with this type of wooden household item. The mechanism turns smoothly.
