Description from the seller

E.W. Schulz
Reise in das gelobte Land
Second Edition

Mühlheim an der Ruhr: F.H. Nieten, 1853

XVI, 339 pages

Octavo (8°)

An attractive and richly illustrated 19th-century German travel account of the Holy Land.

This second edition includes:

• Lithographic portrait frontispiece of the author
• 17 partly tinted lithographic plates (views of Jerusalem, Nazareth, Mount Tabor, the Holy Sepulchre, the Sea of Galilee, Hermon, Lebanon and other biblical sites)
• 1 lithographic map of Palestine with hand-coloured borders
• Decorative 19th-century half-leather binding with gilt spine decoration

The work presents a Protestant German perspective on mid-19th century Palestine and forms part of the important wave of European Holy Land travel literature that preceded modern archaeological exploration.

The plates are particularly appealing, with romantic landscape rendering and detailed architectural depictions of Jerusalem and other sacred sites.

Condition

Later half-leather binding, slightly rubbed and scuffed.

Text block generally good, but with foxing throughout.

Plates more heavily foxed and browned, as visible in photographs.

Approximately 100 pages with noticeable foxing.

Map present.

Overall complete copy with expected age-related wear.
